Oh Comely

The final project of this unit is based on the magazine called Oh Comely and our task is to submit at least one image created using Adobe Photoshop and one created without it in its December issue. First of all I had to consider a few things, like what kind of work would fit in with the style and ethos of the magazine and also not forgetting about the fact that the images should be based around the theme of December. So to help towards the final assignment of producing images to feature in the Oh Comely magazine, I have looked at samples of the magazine and recorded a couple of the articles/images that appealed to me and just by researching the overall magazine helped me to get a feel for what I intend to attempt. Even more, as a class we did a mind map, where we listed events and such related to December.

Oh Comely

"Oh Comely is a lifestyle magazine with life
It is a magazine that makes people smile, full of quiet moments and stories. Read it with a cup of tea or a toddy.
It inspires people to be creative, talk to their neighbours and explore new things. There are adventures that capture the feeling of being free, stories from people with tales to tell, recipes to warm your heart, and crafty things to make. All these things, wrapped up in beautiful words, illustration and photography."

Who reads it? - The distributors seem to think our readers are in their 20's or 30's, mainly female and quite creative.   http://www.stackmagazines.com/featured/oh-comely/

As I flicked through the pages of different issues, I have found that this journal is more of an art based magazine rather than photography, because it seems very artistic. The layout is very clean and simple. It appears neat and spacious with basic fonts throughout and a clear structure. The majority of pages have lots of white space which make the readers explore more. The articles are formal and informative with a huge variety of subjects. It has a contemporary feel and the majority of articles featured similarly. The photos have a minimal color scheme and they're quite flat, but I like them and the way they've been presented, it's quite documentary and simple but yet still manage to intrigue the reader. However I tried to find examples that could be a challenge for me, so I can explore something new like making a collage or double exposure.

Here are some images featured in the magazines that caught my attention:

These two pictures are really eye catching. Each makes you look at it more and think about the way they've been created. The techniques that have been used. Playing with your eyes and imagination.

Like, the one on the left, where the images aren't matching perfectly but your eyes can still create the illusion of normal bodies.
